Hair Alive

A beauty editorial built around movement, texture and the expressive power of hair.

Hair Alive began as a creative test developed with a hairstylist who wanted to showcase the shape, texture and movement of his work. Rather than treating hair as a supporting detail, the series places it at the center of every photograph.

The original idea was conceived as a companion to the Wild Hair project. As the session developed, however, the photographs moved in a different direction. The result became a more focused beauty story built around controlled studio lighting, a warm monochromatic palette and the visual relationship between red hair, pale skin and modern wardrobe.

Hair as form and movement

Across the series, the hairstyling shifts between polished structure and deliberate disorder. In some images, the model’s hair is wrapped tightly around her shoulders and neck, creating the appearance of a sculptural garment. In others, it is lifted, expanded and thrown into motion.

These changes allow the hair to define the character of each frame. Quiet portraits emphasize line and shape, while the more energetic images use movement to create tension and attitude.

The warm yellow background was selected to complement the model’s red hair rather than compete with it. White and blush-toned wardrobe introduces a clean contemporary contrast, while yellow eye makeup carries the background color into the beauty styling.

Minimal styling, controlled light

The photographs were created in the studio using precise lighting and uncomplicated compositions. Keeping the set minimal allowed the hairstyling, expression and silhouette to remain the central elements of the story.

Hair Alive demonstrates how beauty photography can move beyond a conventional headshot. Through styling, gesture, color and movement, the hair becomes both the subject and the structure of the image.

Beauty and hair photography in New York

Ken Jones collaborates with hairstylists, makeup artists, fashion stylists, designers and creative teams to produce beauty editorials, advertising imagery and portfolio photographs. Sessions can be created in the studio or developed as part of a larger fashion and beauty production.
